ROYCE MONTEVERDI
The robotics
pioneer
who transformed
the parking industry.
Royce Monteverdi transformed the parking industry by developing a fully robotic parking system and coining the term “robotic parking.” In 1994, he founded Robotic Parking Systems, Inc.
Before entering the industry, Monteverdi built acclaimed assembly lines for Mercedes-Benz and air bridges for Munich Airport. At Robotic Parking Systems, he helped create the Lift and Run System, the first to allow three-axis simultaneous movement—enabling a garage to move 30 to 50 cars at once.
The company’s first U.S. installation opened in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 2000, with 314 spaces across seven levels. An audit after 705,000 transactions reported 99.5% average occupancy and 99.99% uptime. The company went on to build the first robotic parking garage in the Middle East and the world’s largest automatic garage, both in Dubai.
Monteverdi also helped establish industry guidelines adopted by the National Parking Association and initiated the National Fire Code for automated parking. Beyond engineering, he designed buildings, interiors, and furniture, and supported humanitarian efforts, including hurricane relief with Florida emergency teams and FEMA.
Royce Monteverdi was a visionary engineer whose work and enthusiasm left a lasting mark on the industry. We will greatly miss him.
